Evolution in technology

Artificial Intelligence

Evolution in technology over the last few decades has brought into question the legality of its development and its impact. Artificial Intelligence (AI), is becoming sophisticated and becoming part of a larger society. Arguments and questions have been raised towards the legality of AI among International Law scholars.

Developed countries like the United States, France, United Kingdom, China, Singapore and Korea are investing heavily in the sector of AI, and now countries like India are following suit. While the continued discussion towards AI and its legality in all forms under international law is very much needed, some crucial questions need to be discussed if not answered.

  1. Whether the existing international legal order is equipped to understand and regulate AI and its impact on the world?
  2. There is an apparent technological divide among countries in the world, thus, whether the discussions on AI under international law are on a level playing field? If they are, what is the view of the developing world?

Ideas Nepal, through its policy lab on Artificial Intelligence, aims to delve into the area of Artificial Intelligence and look at it from different lenses – including that from the lens of developing countries like Nepal.
